Trevor Ncube, executive deputy chairman of Mail & Guardian in South Africa, will head up the launch of a new daily newspaper in Zimbabwe in the next months. The new daily, called "Newsday," will start with an initial circulation of about 20,000 copies and will be published Monday through Friday.

It will require an initial investment of US$ 5 million, and Ncube is quite confident that it is right time to launch the title that he thinks will help heal the recently troubled nation.

He sat down with Dean Roper, editor in chief of WAN-IFRA, to discuss this project and other activities in the region. Here is an excerpt of that interview focusing on the issue of press freedom.
