New IFRA Special Report
Automatic Image Processing: Process news photos more efficiently
It is difficult to conceive of modern newsrooms that receive hundreds of news photos daily without automatic image processing. The software not only saves resources but also ensures a high throughput and more consistent results. The many image optimisation programs available on the market can vary greatly in price and performance. A recently published IFRA Special Report on this topic offers well-grounded basic information and orientation aids for system selection.
Andy Williams, the author of the report, gives some useful tips about how to find the best system for your workflow. Read the interview on the ePaper.

WAN-IFRA Special Report: Developments in Colour Management
Over the last decade, there have been many developments in our understanding of colour vision that have resulted in changes in how we measure and manage colour across a wide range of media. These changes are also reflected in the revisions to the international standards for our industry. While many of these advances may seem incremental rather than monumental, such progress is typical of modern technology – constantly changing and evolving.
A WAN-IFRA Special Report on recent changes in colour for the news media includes developments in the areas of:
- Colour measurement
- Colour spaces
- Colour originals and methods used in testing for improvements
- Colour difference formulae
- ICC colour management
- Lighting and viewing conditions
- Colour- and image appearance models
- Colour communication and image metadata
- Imaging
- Display technology
- Process control
The end result of this new knowledge and technology is a fully optimised colour system and better colour.
The Report will be published shortly.
: A fresh look at GREYBALANCE in colour picture reproduction
Greybalance is pervasive at all stages of colour reproduction. It is necessary to control and ensure that no additional colour bias is added by the processing chain. A colour cast in an image that appears at the press is not going to be removed by printing the CMY process control target to a colour neutral standard. The article (see PDF attachment) opens new perspectives on the role of greybalance in colour picture reproduction.

: INCQC jury commences work
The International Color Quality Club competition is now entering the home stretch! Following the evaluation of all the measured results from the copies of the participating newspapers submitted between January and April, the four-member international jury has started with the evaluation of the general printing quality. Taken into account in the evaluation are aspects that lower the standard of quality and lead to points being deducted from the total results. The evaluations will be completed by the end of the first week in May. From left to right: Roberto Fuenzalida from Chile, Anandaramakrishnan Srinivasan from India, Ronnie Poon from Singapore, Markus Ruppe from Germany, and Roland Thees of WAN-IFRA, who is also INCQC Project Manager.

Colour Quality: IFRA testform for colour reproduction
Knowing that the PostScript imagesetter outputs image dot areas precisely and with accurate register is fundamental to controlling quality of all colour sets, not just that of the testform. The IFRA Colour Testform for improving colour reproduction is available as digital version.
