In May, The New York Times launched the second version of its Times Reader software, based on Adobe’s Air application, which comes closer to a real newspaper reading experience.
Once a user downloads Times Reader 2.0, the application automatically updates with the latest NYT content every 5 minutes, meaning users can take it offline with up-to-date news. The interface indeed has the look and feel of the print edition of The New York Times, but with the convenience and usability of a desktop app. It features full-text search, hyperlinks to relevant content, and also includes video and an interactive crossword puzzle.
It is free for existing home delivery subscribers, while non-subscribers must pay a US$ 3.45 fee for access to a week’s worth of content.
