LEAN PRODUCTION

For most of today’s newspaper printing plants, making production more efficient and lower-cost is no longer simply an option. It is a necessity – to survive and stay competitive. The notion of slimming down ideally suits times of crisis when cuts are the order of the day. But it also means improving product quality, flexibility, technical equipment as well as the human aspect.

The EXTRA includes reports on: Chunichi in Japan + Newry extremely lean + Just-in-time at Rossel + Workflow integration in Augsburg + Graphic special: Automation in newspaper production

Newspaper in 3D: BILD in the third dimension

On Saturday, 28 August, the focus of BILD and BILD.de will be on 3D.BILD: Europe's largest daily newspaper is entering the third dimension and will become the first German daily newspaper to be published completely in 3D. All photos, graphics and ads in the national edition as well as all regional editions can be viewed in so-called "red-cyan anaglyph" mode. The three-dimensional effect is achieved by looking through special glasses, supplied free of charge to BILD readers together with their newspaper edition.

In addition to the daily news production, the BILD newsroom researched and prepared further exclusive contents for the 3D edition. "Avatar" producer James Cameron explains the future of 3D technology in an interview, boxer Vladimir Klitschko puts up his fists to the readers and the football stars playing in the German premier league come to life.

It is not just the editorial content of the 3D BILD edition that is a highlight, but also its advertising. Advertisers such as Volkswagen, Media Markt, Ferrero, Toto Lotto, Universal Pictures International Germany, to nmae but a few, are represented.

Germany's most successful news portal comes alive

The trend towards §D has also reached Germany's most successful news portal. BILD.de offers users a 3D world that they can access directly via the home page. It presents an extensive photo gallery, specially produced videos, clips of international pop stars, short films and games in this special mode. All the user needs to view this special content on BILD.de is a normal computer monitor and 3D glasses. This 3D world will remain in existence beyond 28 August and will be extended continuously.

Parallel to BILD and BILD.de, Arte, the French-German TV station, will show films in the 3D mode on 28 August 2010. Viewers can use the glasses supplied by BILD also for TV.

Welt Kompakt presents Scroll Edition – Printed Internet?: Welt Kompakt presents Scroll Edition – Printed Internet?

With a so-called "Scroll Edition" the Axel Springer publishing corporation conducted a “unique media experiment” on 1 July and published a special edition of Welt Kompakt (the little sister of the German national daily newspaper, Die Welt). The product is unusual in several respects: Firstly, the news stories were not written and compiled by professional newspaper journalists, but by “bloggers, tweeters, etc.”, as indicated in the deck. Secondly, the copy must be turned 90 degrees (back margin up) before it can be read. “Help, we are printing the Internet” is the heading of the editorial. Indeed, the layout does somewhat resemble the screen display of a news website. Turning a page straight away demonstrates what is meant by a scroll edition: The articles are not presented in typical newspaper page layout style, i.e. weighted by their position on the page, the size of headings and text length, but are arranged one below the other in a broad text field covering more than two-thirds of the page area, presented as unformatted solid text in uniform typography, without paragraphs and subheadings though with many photos (in differing quality). The reader almost automatically reaches for the mouse to scroll the text upwards … however, he must still turn over the page, though in this case from bottom to top.
On the right, beside the main text area, are two narrow columns, similar to orientation bars. One of the columns is used for additional information concerning the articles arranged alongside and about their authors, the other for brief items compiled from blog contributions.
Is that “printed Internet”? Whereas that may be true in relation to the contents, it is not so for the actual character of the medium that can be copied in several optical characteristics at most – but no more than that. Each medium has its own special strengths, but also weaknesses. Bringing together the two worlds, Internet and newspaper, therefore always means a compromise. Nevertheless, the project was worthwhile because it gives rise to a mutual interest among the user groups, while at the same time highlighting the benefits of each medium: fast information, reactions and opinions, unfiltered and from all over the world, with the possibility to join in via the Internet. Researched and verified news, comments and articles, written or prepared by journalists, weighted and put on pages in the newspaper. Is that how the newspaper of the future will look? Probably not.
It is neither certain that blogger will (or want to) secure for themselves a fixed place in the printed newspaper, nor that the Internet will continue to be such a paradise for news. A great deal is possible and allowed in the Internet that will remain out of bounds for a print product. In contrast, publishers have the possibility to operate both print and online and thus benefit from synergies.
It is expected that the various types of media – including mobiles and e-readers – will drift apart rather than move closer together. The Internet has topicality and interactivity on its side. The newspapers has other qualities that it can and should turn to its advantage (e.g. credibility and competence at regional level). It is not the mixed medium, but the media mix, i.e. mutual supplementation, that gives the added value.
It would be worthwhile to test the innovative format with the vertical two-page spreads, as this could benefit travellers and commuters on public transport by enabling them to open out the print newspaper without disturbing the person sitting next to them.

: A fresh look at GREYBALANCE in colour picture reproduction

Greybalance is pervasive at all stages of colour reproduction. It is necessary to control and ensure that no additional colour bias is added by the processing chain. A colour cast in an image that appears at the press is not going to be removed by printing the CMY process control target to a colour neutral standard. The article (see PDF attachment) opens new perspectives on the topic of greybalance in colour picture reproduction.

: DRM: Installation of production systems

29 June 2010. All is going according to plan. Following the roofing ceremony on 18 March 2010, installation of the production systems at the new Druckzentrum Rhein-Main printing centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, is proceeding apace. A 40 t crane was installed to bring the components of the printing press into position. The crane will be removed when the work is completed. The Wifag is scheduled to be fully assembled by the end of July. Also being installed are the finishing systems in the 140 m-long and d 45 m-wide hall that is attached to the presshall that, despite its size and due to enormous steel girders, manages without disturbing supporting struts. The two chief executive officers, Ulrike Köhler and Michael Rettich, state that the project is running on time; production is scheduled to begin in November. The printing centre is a joint project of Verlagsgruppe Rhein Main (Mainz) and Verlagshaus Südhessen (Darmstadt).

: manroland-wifag deal off

After announcing on 26 February that it was in the process of negotiating the purchase of Swiss press manufacturer WIFAG, on 12 April manroland AG announced that the two companies agreed to call off negotiations. “It was not possible to harmonise the interests of both parties. However, manroland and WIFAG remain open for cooperation on a technical level,” said the press release from manroland. “WIFAG announced their financial problems already last year after IFRA Expo,” said Manfred Werfel, executive director of Newspaper Production, WAN-IFRA. “There was much speculation about who would become this partner. … Concerns were that the newspaper press supplier would be taken over by an investor from outside the industry which would not be interested in the technology and the newspaper market.” With negotiations called off, that outside possibility remains a reality.

Now he discusses the possible deal with WAN-IFRA.

: An unexpected stream of revenues

Semi-commercial jobs which would normally require heatset printing are being produced in coldset at the Singapore Press Holding (SPH) Media Centre Plant on their manroland UNISET press using various types of newsprint. "We have done posters, leaflets, newsletters & magazines. Our customers include banks, retail outlets, government bodies, hospitals, associations, etc.," says Anthony Cheng, Executive Vice-President of Production at SPH. "The financial crisis actually brought about opportunities in that companies that are used to glossy heatset promotional materials are driven to look at alternatives because of budget constraints, and have begun to accept coldset newsprint stock (of higher grammage 70-95 gsm and wood-free or hybrid grade that are much brighter in shade) as an viable alternative, achieving more or less the same marketing objectives. This has brought about an unexpected but much welcome revenue stream to us,” he said. Cheng’s team has also broke new grounds by successfully printing on translucent newsprint with coldset printing process and normal coldset inks.

WAN-IFRA Research and Material Testing Centre : Study

It is a known fact that the colour gamut of a coldset web offset press reduces over time, the reason mainly being the ink drying behavior and the properties of newsprint. Cold set inks set/dry mainly by absorption. During the drying process, the ink penetrates into the paper substrate and loses its gloss and some saturation. This results in a reduction in colour gamut when compared to a fresh printed sample. At the WAN-IFRA Research and Material Testing Centre, in Chennai, India (labindia@ifra.com), we tried to find out how much the colour gamut reduces over time and what is the effect of different paper and inks on the colour gamut reduction.

The Study with the title: "Reduction of colour gamut after printing in a coldset process" is available now (free of charge).

: Everything you can do to reduce costs

To cut costs and to save money in the process of newspaper production throughout the value chain – from editorial to advertising, to administration, production, sales and distribution – is an issue for newspaper executives all over the world. We asked representatives of WAN-IFRA committees and expert groups to let us know which cost reduction projects they run today or plan to start in the near future and what effects they had or expect from these measures.

If you would like to contribute to this collection of cost reduction ideas, please send your comments to editor@wan-ifra.org with the subject: cost reduction. Thank you.

New Research Project: Sustainability in newspaper production

In July, WAN-IFRA, in cooperation with the Faculty of Media at HTWK Leipzig (FH) in Germany, launched a research project focused on “Sustainability in newspaper production.” The planned 18-month project will investigate the ecological and economic sustainability of newspaper production, with the primary goal of developing a reference model to help determine the impact that newspapers have on the environment during their life cycle.

Michael Weidel, scientific collaborator at HTWK, is in charge of the project at Leipzig, and here is an excerpt of interview with him that will be featured in the upcoming May-June edition of WAN-IFRA Magazine.

Special Report: RFID case study: Yedioth Ahronoth Group

The technology of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is used where large numbers of product identifications have to be performed safely in high speed and large volumes without manual intervention.Trading companies and warehouses as well as department store chains are making use of RFID and drive the further development of this technology.

Since the publication of the IFRA Special Report on “The Use of Radio Frequency Identification in Newspaper Production” we see a constant development of RFID. Components get smaller and device prices drop with growing numbers. Today RFID tags or parts of them can even be produced by special printing techniques (“Printed Electronics”). Time was right to run a real life case study with RFID tagged newsprint paper reels in newspaper printing environment.

The WAN-IFRA Special Report “Paper Reel Management with RFID Technology – A Case Study” (01.2010) was written by Prof Yale T. Herer and Prof Avy Shtub from the Technion Institute in Haifa, Israel, and Assaf Avrahami, CEO of Yedioth Information Technologies (YIT).

New project:: IFRA Reel Code 2020

Due to former technical limitations, the existing Ifra barcode (introduced in the early 1980s) mixes identification and information about the reel. At the same time the space for additional information is limited and cannot be exceeded with the existing barcode structure, despite the fact that there is a growing need for adding more information. A new system must serve the needs of up-to-date techniques, workflow demands and future technical requirements.
