Druckzentrum Rhein-Main (DRM) in Rüsselsheim, Germany, has reached the halfway point of construction and celebrated on 18th March 2010 with a roof-raising ceremony.

: Finkbeiner discusses WIFAG deal

WIFAG has made no secret since this past fall that it was seeking a strong partner after announcing a significant job reduction plan. It looks like the Swiss press manufacturer has found it in the form of manroland. Gerd Finkbeiner, CEO of manroland AG, confirmed Friday in a company press release that the press manufacturer is indeed negotiating the purchase of WIFAG AG. Now he discusses the possible deal with WAN-IFRA.

: An unexpected stream of revenues

Semi-commercial jobs which would normally require heatset printing are being produced in coldset at the Singapore Press Holding (SPH) Media Centre Plant on their manroland UNISET press using various types of newsprint. "We have done posters, leaflets, newsletters & magazines. Our customers include banks, retail outlets, government bodies, hospitals, associations, etc.," says Anthony Cheng, Executive Vice-President of Production at SPH. "The financial crisis actually brought about opportunities in that companies that are used to glossy heatset promotional materials are driven to look at alternatives because of budget constraints, and have begun to accept coldset newsprint stock (of higher grammage 70-95 gsm and wood-free or hybrid grade that are much brighter in shade) as an viable alternative, achieving more or less the same marketing objectives. This has brought about an unexpected but much welcome revenue stream to us,” he said. Cheng’s team has also broke new grounds by successfully printing on translucent newsprint with coldset printing process and normal coldset inks.

INCQC: The international newspaper printing contest has started

The IFRA International Newspaper Color Quality Club (INCQC) sets new standards for newspaper printing quality worldwide. After registration was closed at the end of December 2009 with 161 participants from all over the world, the 2010-2012 competition starts into its practical phase with monthly test prints from January through April 2010. The newly developed test element and instructions are available to everybody on the Color Quality Club website. The new Club members will be announced in June 2010 and presented at IFRA Expo in October 2010. Good luck!

WAN-IFRA Research and Material Testing Centre : Study

It is a known fact that the colour gamut of a coldset web offset press reduces over time, the reason mainly being the ink drying behavior and the properties of newsprint. Cold set inks set/dry mainly by absorption. During the drying process, the ink penetrates into the paper substrate and loses its gloss and some saturation. This results in a reduction in colour gamut when compared to a fresh printed sample. At the WAN-IFRA Research and Material Testing Centre, in Chennai, India (labindia@ifra.com), we tried to find out how much the colour gamut reduces over time and what is the effect of different paper and inks on the colour gamut reduction.

The Study with the title: "Reduction of colour gamut after printing in a coldset process" is available now (free of charge).

: Everything you can do to reduce costs

To cut costs and to save money in the process of newspaper production throughout the value chain – from editorial to advertising, to administration, production, sales and distribution – is an issue for newspaper executives all over the world. We asked representatives of WAN-IFRA committees and expert groups to let us know which cost reduction projects they run today or plan to start in the near future and what effects they had or expect from these measures.

If you would like to contribute to this collection of cost reduction ideas, please send your comments to editor@wan-ifra.org with the subject: cost reduction. Thank you.

Colour Quality: How good is your print quality?

The Colour Quality Self-Check is an online tool that is accessible free of charge to anybody. It allows you to check your colour print quality by printing the IFRA test element and input the measured values into an online form. The immediate results of an automatic evaluation will show you, were your quality stands. If you want IFRA to do the measurements, use the Color Quality IFRA Check model.

Special Report: RFID case study: Yedioth Ahronoth Group

The technology of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is used where large numbers of product identifiications have to be performed safely in high speed and large volumes without manual intervention.Trading companies and warehouses as well as department store chains are making use of RFID and drive the further development of this technology.

Since the publication of the IFRA Special Report on “The Use of Radio Frequency Indentification in Newspaper Production” we see a constant development of RFID. Components get smaller and device prices drop with growing numbers. Today RFID tags or parts of them can even be produced by special printing techniques (“Printed Electronics”). Time was right to run a real life case study with RFID tagged newsprint paper reels in newspaper printing environment.

The WAN-IFRA Special Report “Paper Reel Management with RFID Technology – A Case Study” (01.2010) was written by Prof Yale T. Herer and Prof Avy Shtub from the Technion Institute in Haifa, Israel, and Assaf Avrahami, CEO of Yedioth Information Technologies (YIT).

New Research Project: Sustainability in newspaper production

In July, WAN-IFRA, in cooperation with the Faculty of Media at HTWK Leipzig (FH) in Germany, launched a research project focused on “Sustainability in newspaper production.” The planned 18-month project will investigate the ecological and economic sustainability of newspaper production, with the primary goal of developing a reference model to help determine the impact that newspapers have on the environment during their life cycle.

By applying industry-specific research and investigating problem areas in printing technology, the Faculty of Media HTWK Leipzig (FH) becomes a central contact point for newspaper printers all over the world.

New WAN-IFRA Special Report: How to plan new printing plants

"New Printing Plants" is the title of a new WAN-IFRA Special Report. It originates from a project that was managed by a German-Indian research group with researchers from the Technical University of Chemnitz and the University of Manipal. The IFRA South Asian Committee steered the project. Although the starting point was clearly focused on the Indian market, the guidelines and detailed checklists provided are, without any doubt, of high value for newspaper companies all over the world that are about to start projects to build new printing plants.

The 64-pages report is already online in English; German and French versions will folllow: free download for WAN/IFRA members from

Conference report: Managing Ink and Paper 2009

Some of the industry's brightest materials specialists converged in Hamburg, Germany, on 26-27 May, to discuss and debate the most pressing issues around the topic of Managing Ink and Paper. With rising newsprint, and other material, costs, as well as more awareness about environmental issues, this international conference proved to be an ideal platform to hear and exchange best-practice experiences. IFRA's Manfred Werfel, director of research, production business unit, was on-hand and wrote this report.

New project:: IFRA Reel Code 2020

Due to former technical limitations, the existing Ifra barcode (introduced in the early 1980s) mixes identification and information about the reel. At the same time the space for additional information is limited and cannot be exceeded with the existing barcode structure, despite the fact that there is a growing need for adding more information. A new system must serve the needs of up-to-date techniques, workflow demands and future technical requirements.

Research: Materials Management Database

The database is intended as an information source for printers, pressroom foremen and technical management, providing up-to-date facts and advice for dealing with the materials used in producing newspapers. Free use for all.

Chris Doyle is President and Publisher of the Naples News Media Group, USA WAN-IFRA: What will be your main focus at the IFRA Expo? CHRIS DOYLE: I will be like a kid in a candy store at IFRA. I love data, and I love best practices, and IFRA looks to promise both. I am a big believer in collaboration and learning from peers and IFRA offers an opportunity to do that beyond the U.S. That being said, I believe that social media is a game changer in our industry, and I intend to talk to everyone, including vendors, about their thoughts and solutions, and I want to talk to vendors who are thinking of workflow and processes with this in mind.
