Apple iPad: Do we need the new Apple Swiss Army knife?

The Apple iPad will help Apple grow stronger and sell more services, content and hardware. Their pricing is quite clever, ranging between 499$ - 829$.
But the low price entry-level device will clearly be compared with the Kindle 9,7" 489$ device, which includes 3G …when the iPad is 499$ without 3G.
"The iPad could follow the successful track of the iPhone, says Stig Nordqvist, WAN-IFRA Emerging Digital Platforms and Business Development director. But he does not see signs of revenues for news media on this new Apple ecosystem".

 

E-reading: : Wrap up CES Las Vegas 2010

CES (Consumer Electronics Show) Las Vegas, the world's largest consumer technology trade ended on January 10. Two new e-reading devices, the Skiff Reader and the QUE proReader, developed with the press industry in mind, were launched at this event. And it comes as no surprise that Amazon has chosen this very same week to announce that its Kindle DX (also designed for the press!) was ready for a worldwide shipment.


 

 

 

 


Skiff, formerly known as FirstPaper, launched the Skiff Reader (see photos left and on top of the page) and Plastic Logic targets business professionnals with the QUE proReader.

 

: Successful WAN-IFRA E-reading Conference in Paris

More than 90 particpants from 18 countries discussed the latest developments in E-reading. The two days stressed the importance for publishers to deal with the E-reading topic even at this early stage.

While presenting portfolios rich with news or dedicated applications, mobile websites or web applications, the lecturers at Mobile Media Day (May 18 & 19 in Amsterdam) also shared their own questions with the 85 delegates.

 

Executive Programmes: eNews Update

The first seminar of the joint eNews 2010 and eNews Alumni group took place in a sunny Paris on March 17–18. The exclusive group had a chance to hear Philippe Jannet, CEO of Le Monde Interactif, discuss the company's e-reading strategy, as well as visiting Les Echos to hear from Olivier Delteil, Business Development Manager of Les Echos Electronic Publications. It is difficult to base a strategy on the happy few who, by necessity, read the newspaper on the PC screen or who have opted for an e-reader. Dutch e-reader developer iRex Technologies have announced that their latest e-reader, the DR800SG, will go on sale in October through electronics retailer Best Buy in the US, and will link to the Barnes & Noble e-book store. Users will also be able to access some 1100 newspapers from Newspaper Direct.

Philippe Jannet, CEO of Le Monde Interactif talked about that paper's mobile experience. Le Monde already has a paid for model online with a subscription scheme that sees some content published for free and other services, including the right to contribute UGC charged for. Jannet mused on the idea of charging users to write for the paper as he didn't invent the model but it works and ads sell for more on subscriber pages than free ones.

“We are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code” said Apple in a recent statement. Designers can now develop apps with Flash and compile them into a native iOS format. Apple also published for the first time its App Store Review Guidelines to help developers understand how they review submitted apps.
