BioDME is the name of an EU project, run by Topsoe (http://www.topsoe.com), a research company specialising in clean energy solutions, and supported by a consortium of partners. Topsoe develops a method to produce DME (dimethyl aether) from biomass as a sustainable and highly competitive alternative to fossil fuels. DME combines high energy efficiency with minimal environmental impact. The exhaust from cars and trucks running on DME is much cleaner, partly because the combustion is soot-free.
In cooperation with Swedish Chemrec, Topsoe will design and build the new DME plant, which will produce DME from black liquor – a by-product of paper production which is normally burnt.
