The Deputy Federal Minister for Communications, Mr. Alexander Zharov, said that the Russian government will lower the import duty on light coated paper from the current 15 per cent to 5 per cent. He broke this news, long awaited by Russian publishers and printers, at the opening ceremony of the 5th Publishing Expo held in Moscow on 2-3 November. Russia does not produce light coated paper; high import tariffs have disadvantaged Russian printers compared to their foreign competitors.

The “Managing the Crisis” session exposed its participants to comparative trends on the Russian and international press markets. According to Alexander Strakhov, CEO of the Media3 publishing holding and GIPP’s President, left, the crisis stopped many development projects, but did not inflict any significant damage on the existing industry.

The session on publishing and distribution in ePaper, or "smart edition" formats, organized by the Russian Inter Pochta distribution agency, was filled to capacity. For Russian publishers with their own country’s huge distances and millions of Russian speakers living abroad, ePaper is an way to instantly reach audiences without charging exorbitant prices for distribution.

Sture Udd of UpCode Ltd. is proud of his company’s first success in Russia. Poleznye Stranitsy ("useful pages"), a Moscow city guide, was the first to carry UpCode, an electronic tag that can be "read" by mobile phones, on the road map inside the volume. It provides information on-line on shops, cafes, gas stations, etc., along the route and promises to be in high demand for both readers and advertisers.
