It might be that Apple just made life easier for publishers pondering if they should start developing for smaller-sized devices.
Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs commented during the company’s quarterly earnings call yesterday (Monday 18) that he did not believe on an “avalanche of tablets” about to enter the market: “It appears to be just a handful of credible entrants, not exactly an avalanche”.
About the seven-inch screens of some of those devices, Jobs said that “This size isn’t sufficient to create great tablet apps in our opinion…Given that all users will already have a smartphone in their pockets, giving up precious display area to fit a tablet in our pocket is clearly the wrong tradeoff”.
Earlier in October, during the WAN-IFRA 3rd International E-Reading & Tablet Conference, Craig McKinnis from Gannett Digital Ventures, US had already expressed skepticism about a smaller tablet format: “I’d actually be curious to hear from the audience if they have similar concerns or thoughts or if there’s just a completely different opinion in Europe than there is in the United States of a seven inch device. But it’s quite possibly a negative trend that’s coming along in the industry that tablet makers believe a little bit of a smaller screen size might be the, at least for devices a significant market for them. We think for publishing it’s probably not a good thing”.
