Christian Unger is the CEO of Ringier, the multimedia publishing group based in Switzerland and the publisher of the daily newspaper Blick. Ringier is a model for media diversification and long-term strategy for growth.

Dean Roper, editor in chief of WAN-IFRA, talked to Unger during the WAN-IFRA Congress in Hyderabad, India, in early December 2009, about Ringier's activities, especially its expansion into other regions of the world. Here is an excerpt of that interview.

Trevor Ncube, executive deputy chairman of Mail & Guardian in South Africa, will head up the launch of a new daily newspaper in Zimbabwe in the next months. The new daily, called "Newsday," will start with an initial circulation of about 20,000 copies and will be published Monday through Friday.

It will require an initial investment of US$ 5 million, and Ncube is quite confident that it is right time to launch the title that he thinks will help heal the recently troubled nation.

Is investigative journalism giving up on newspapers? "No!" stressed Aroon Purie, the founding chairman and editor-in-chief of the India Today Group.

Purie, a well known journalist in India, spoke earlier this afternoon on a panel discussing the abandonment of investigative journalism in newspapers.

"You need smart journalists, determined journalists, people who have a passion for this," Aroon explained.
