Ink Saving & Quality
Al-Jazirah is a daily newspaper printed in two simultaneous editions in Riyadh and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Ahmed Mallah is Production Manager of Al Jazirah Newspaper.
WAN-IFRA: What are the newspaper products you print? Is it a pure coldset production or do you use heatset as well?
AHMED MALLAH: We print a daily broadsheet newspaper called Al-Jazirah. We also have three weekly supplements, two of them are tabloid. We do have heatset for the cover pages in which we don't use Oris for those pages. We only use Oris for the coldset pages.
WAN-IFRA: How long have you been working with the ink saving software from CGS?
MALLAH: Around 18 months to 2 years.
WAN-IFRA: Why did you choose the Oris Ink Saver? Did you do tests to compare with other software programs (if yes, please explain)?
MALLAH: CGS gave us a trial period to test the software and we were satisfied with the result. We did not try other software.
WAN-IFRA: How much do you save on printing ink with the Ink Saver? And how do you measure the savings?
MALLAH: We purchased Oris mainly to reduce the set-off we were getting on the pages, our concern was the quality of the newspaper first, then any ink saving would be a bonus.
WAN-IFRA: Did you see quality improvements resulting from the use of the software? In what respect?
MALLAH: Yes, huge difference reduced the set-off almost 99%.
WAN-IFRA: Do you work according to the ISO process standard for newspapers 12647-3? What colour profile are you using?
MALLAH: Currently we are not, but we are changing soon to implement colour management and work according to standards.
