WAN-IFRA Joint CEO Timothy Balding presents the 2009 World Newspaper Trends report in the opening joint session of the World Newspaper Congress and World Editors Forum on Tuesday afternoon. Under the conference slogan "Newspapers: A multi-media growth business," Balding presents statistics that, in some regards, would argue the claim. The bright spot in the numbers is that circulation continues to climb, lead by countries such as India and China. However, advertising income continues to decline, and the hope for a digital "bonanza," as Balding termed it, seems to be clearly nothing more than a hope.

"Publishers will have to look elsewhere for new revenue," Balding said. However, his 40-minute presentation ends with inspirational music and positive words about the importance and longevity of the medium. View WAN-IFRA's full report at http://www.wan-press.org/article18330.html.
