Average free daily circulation in Europe fell 19 percent from 26.2 to 21.3 million in 2009, according to the latest edition of the Free Daily Newspaper newsletter, which has just been published. When average circulation in 2010 is compared with 2009, a further drop of 9 percent is seen. There are now 82 free titles published in Europe, down from 139 in 2007.
The Free Daily Newspaper newsletter is published regularly by Piet Bakker, who has followed free dailies worldwide for several years. Bakker, a professor of Cross Media Content at Hogeschool Utrecht and associate professor in the Department of Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam, launched the Free Daily Newspapers newsletter in 2004 and it now has 900 subscribers.
