It has emerged recently that Rupert Murdoch (Chairman of News Corporation) is planning a cooperation with Apple CEO Steve Jobs with a view to launching on the market a daily newspaper for Tablet devices, especially the iPad, in the near future. According to unconfirmed reports, "The Daily", as it will be called, will cost 99 cent per issue and will be updated several times during the course of the day. It is reported that the project will benefit from an initial investment of about US$ 30 million.
Especially in the U.S.A., newspapers have come under such strong financial pressure that urgent efforts are being made to find ways to generate turnover and put a stop to newspaper closures. Rupert Murdoch has brought about a re-think concerning the still largely free-of-charge online editions by introducing a pay-for model for the online editions of "The Times", "The Sun" and "The Wall Street Journal". Therefore it is only logical that "The Daily" should not be offered free of charge. The fact that the newspaper will be offered via the Apple App Store ensures Apple a 30 percent share of the revenue generated from the sale of each issue.
