TRIPOD is a research project funded by the European Union aiming on the automation of image descriptions and captions. The focus is on the “where?” of the five ‘W’s for Journalists. Digital cameras are delivering GPS data as well as the digital image. Both information combined with geographic data about the location like landscape or architecture using scientific algorithms and databases are already presenting astonishing results. At the Freie Presse in Chemnitz plate production is done on Kodak New Generation thermal CTP imaging systems. After punching and bending on a Nela VCP system, the plates are taken (with PlateFlow control) via conveyor belts and a lift directly to the printing towers, where they are fed into sorting stackers. An operator arranges the plates in racks in the printing unit, ready for the APL robot that removes them from the rack and mounts them on the plate cylinder.
