Excelling at Expo: Essential tips and trends

Cooperation, partnership, automation, innovation, new business, and everything “e-media” – all topics that are sure to swirl through the halls of the Hamburg Messe during IFRA Expo 2010 (4-6 October). In part 2 of our Expo preview coverage, we analyse the trends leading up to the event, and preview all the numerous side conferences during the busy week, including the World Editors Forum, e-Reading & Tablet conference, and Advertising Summit.

World Press Trends 2010

Newspaper circulation worldwide fell just slightly in 2009 despite the economic downturn, and the impact of the global recession on newspaper advertising revenues appears to be easing, according to WAN-IFRA’s recently published World Press Trends 2010 report.

Express & Echo form the ideal Green Team

What started as a local bid to tackle the plague of plastic shopping bags has turned into something of a shining beacon for the Express & Echo of Exeter in U.K. From that one issue, this 22,000-daily circulation newspaper has nurtured a community project that helps link it firmly with schools and town councils while connecting with new generations – all around the theme of environmental awareness.

Advertising – Year One of the change?

The quest for online advertising revenues resembles more crossing a desert than reaching the El Dorado that has been promised for years. The volumes of web ads sold so far and the prices charged are still too low. Despite this, advertisers are making increasing use of the web. Then there are also the mobile platforms that are lying in wait. The success of apps and the fascination that the iPad has for advertisers serve as a wake-up call. Today’s ad systems are ready to help.

Soft proofing: Control desk profiles

Some researchers have documented the “dryback” on newsprint, but without mentioning the practical implications with regard to newspaper printing and soft proofing. The surge of interest in monitor soft proofing has meant that perhaps a different soft proof image with more saturated colours – a “strong colour” version of the image – is needed by the printer as an accurate guide.

Greybalance in colour reproduction

If you don’t have greybalance, no colour is correct. The way greybalance is defined is being discussed among experts. This report supports the adoption of a standardised greybalance at all stages of colour reproduction.
