A crisis rings in uncertainty, but it can also spark innovation. New business models are being born and new trends emerging. Indeed, publishers have rolled up their sleeves to tackle the growing challenges and lean on the supply industry to do the same.

Paving the way to sustainability
In July, WAN-IFRA announced that this year’s IFRA Expo in Vienna, 12-15 October, will be a completely carbon-neutral event, thanks to the association’s partnership with paper manufacturer AbitibiBowater, which will provide carbon credits that it has accumulated to offset all of the exhibition’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The ‘Daily Me’ a closer reality
Hard times at print publications have led to some fresh thinking about how newspaper readers want their news delivered. Customised, or individuated news publications are one way to cut down on the expense of publishing and delivery and to also ensure that readers are getting the news they want.

Making money without Google
Google’s online dominance is staggering, but a lack of transparency towards business partners and the disputed reproduction of editorial contents make Google a controversial business partner. Despite this, many newspaper websites choose Google when they want to earn a few thousand euros with AdWords.

The goLocal initiative
During the Strategies in Newsrooms Focus Session on Tuesday, 13 October at IFRA Expo, Newsplex, in partnership with dpa, will announce a new initiative called goLocal, which is aimed at encouraging and helping support local and regional publishers to make the most of their unique position within their markets.

Automating plate transfer
Modern newspaper presses offer a high level of automation. Likewise, plate production is fully automated, up to the press-ready plate. What has been missing up to now is the automatic linking of the CTP system with the press. Now this gap in automation also seems to be closed.
